About Me:
Hello! My name is Karlie Overstake, and I am thrilled to be teaching Elementary Art (K-5th) here at Fayetteville-Perry Elementary School. This is my second year teaching visual arts, and my passion is helping students discover their artistic potential and develop a love for creating.
Education:
Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Arts and Education- Bowling Green State University
Teaching Philosophy:
Art-making is one of the most important processes in the world today. Art allows students an outlet for their emotions, thoughts, and feelings. It allows them to think creatively, emotionally, and logically as they create their work. Art is not about just putting a line on a page; it is about the students understanding why they put a line where they did. Arts help students grow. The students learn things about themselves that they did not know before. Art helps students express what they are feeling and/or thinking. The arts enable us to live meaningfully.
Children are natural artists, I am merely the guide for them to learn and understand new materials. When creating lessons for my classroom, I focus on the process over the final product. I understand that each child is coming into my classroom with different skill sets, learning styles, and abilities. I believe that a student-centered approach allows me to celebrate different learning styles of the students and to celebrate inclusivity in my classroom. I provide adapted lessons when needed and accommodate the needs of individual students during each particular lesson on a case-by-case basis. I believe that art shouldn’t always focus on the outcome of the final piece, but rather on the process of the creation of the project. My goal for my classroom is to create an environment for my students to experience the process and understand the outcomes that are possible. I encourage them and mention that the outcomes are endless with just a little bit of creativity and imagination.
